Celebrating Houston History: Honoring Betty Trapp Chapman

Celebrating Houston History: Honoring Betty Trapp Chapman

Join us for a special event hosted by The Heritage Society as we celebrate and honor our very own long-time Houston Heights Woman’s Club member, esteemed preservationist, author, and historian Betty Trapp Chapman.

For over 40 years, Ms. Chapman has dedicated herself to uncovering, preserving, and sharing the fascinating stories of Houston’s past. Within our own Club, her vibrant legacy includes her longtime involvement in the Evening Group Literary Club, her memorable role as a Founder's Day presenter, and her generous tradition of personally presenting one of her historical works on Texas women to our scholarship recipients. As a passionate leader in historic preservation—recognized with the Mayor’s Award for her extensive contributions—she has shaped how our city values its historic architecture, sites, and heritage. From her long-running "Houston Heritage" column in the Houston Business Journal and her numerous published works (including Houston Women: Invisible Threads in the Tapestry and Rough Road to Justice) to her leadership with The Heritage Society, the Houston Archaeological and Historical Commission, and the Texas Avenue Historic Marker Project, her impact on our community is profound.

As highlighted in the Houston Chronicle, her lifelong mission has been to ensure Houstonians can take pride in the place where they live by saving our built environment for future generations. For even more reading on her distinguished career, you can also explore her 2011 Houston Chronicle feature article. Now, it is our turn to celebrate her remarkable legacy.
