COMMUNITY OUTREACH

When our founding members adopted a Constitution and By-Laws in 1905, they added the clause "to aid and encourage charitable and educational interests of Houston Heights." More than a century later, the Houston Heights Woman's Club continues to honor that tradition by actively sponsoring multiple charitable causes yearly.

We believe that small, consistent efforts can create a big impact. Our members dedicate hundreds of hours each year to a variety of ongoing volunteer projects and donation drives, making a difference right here in our neighborhood.

These projects represent just a few of the ways we give back, from beautifying our shared spaces and supporting local schools to providing for those in need.

Supporting Students Through Communities in Schools (CIS)

Through a long-standing partnership with the Communities in Schools (CIS) program,  year-round support is provided to at-risk students in area public schools. Our initiatives are designed to lift morale and provide a little extra joy throughout the school year.

  • Halloween Treat Bags: Each fall, members assemble treat bags filled with goodies to give students a festive and fun Halloween.
  • Annual CIS Holiday Wish List: We work with CIS to fulfill holiday wish list items for students who might otherwise go without, ensuring they have a memorable holiday season.
  • Graduation Recognition: Our students' achievements are celebrated by writing personalized, supportive graduation cards and sponsoring graduation parties, honoring their hard work and dedication.

In-Kind Donation Drives

Several donation drives are organized throughout the year to provide essential items to those in need.

  • Annual School Uniform Drive: Each summer, we collect and donate new and gently used school uniforms to support students in need, helping to ensure they start the school year with confidence.
  • Feminine Hygiene Drives: Feminine hygiene products are acquired and donated to HISD students, helping to ensure that girls in our community have access to these necessities.
  • Food Pantry Donations: Our small, ongoing in-kind donation drives collect non-perishable food items to support local food pantries, making sure our neighbors have access to food.

Investing in the Future of Our Community

The Hortense Ward Scholarship is a cornerstone of our commitment to education. Each year, we award a scholarship to a deserving female law student, helping to support her pursuit of higher education and future success.

Volunteering in Our Community

In addition to our organized drives, our members are dedicated to a range of other volunteer efforts, contributing hundreds of hours annually. We believe that whether it's lending a hand at a Club event or assisting a small non-profit, every act of service matters.
