GET INVOLVED

The Houston Heights Woman's Club offers a variety of community service and social activities. Whether you're looking for outreach service in our community, an engaging book club discussion, exploring artistic expression in the writing & creativity group, an arts outing, or a happy hour get-together, the club offers something to match the diverse interests of our membership.

Club members look forward to our annual events:

The Houston Heights Woman's Club proudly sponsors many charitable causes. When our founding members adopted a Constitution and By-Laws in 1905, they added the clause "to aid and encourage charitable and educational interests of Houston Heights" as an integral part of the Club's purpose. Community outreach continues to be a vital part of our organization.

Many of our events are free and open to members and guests, and one of the many benefits of membership is reduced pricing for some of our annual events.

Writing & Creativity Group

The Writing & Creativity Group meets at the Clubhouse on the third Monday of each month. We are a group of members who have created a space to appreciate and explore all types of creative expression.  We provide an audience for each other’s creativity.

Club members are welcome to join us and expand our network of like-minded members to share ideas, creative resources and events.

Our monthly meetings will be held at the Clubhouse with guest speaker “expert” talks, group projects and feedback on our writers' written work.  Additionally, members take turns planning creative excursions in the community such as classes, art, film, music, theater, museums, cooking and poetry. While several of us are writers, all of us share the desire to pursue and explore all sorts of creative expression.

If you are looking for a group to spark your creativity, we would love to meet you at our next meeting.

Contact Kathy or Marlo for more information and visit the calendar to register for the next event!

The Tea

In 2007, members launched one of the Club’s most popular fundraising events, the Victorian Tea.

Member-hostesses adopt a table, establish its theme and decorate it with china, crystal, silver, linens, and elaborate centerpieces.

Attendees (many of whom are in costume) enjoy a traditional afternoon tea of scones, quiches, finger sandwiches, tarts, cookies, and the finest Darjeeling tea.

It is not an event that will soon be forgotten!

Join a discussion of The Comfort of Crows by Margaret Renkl

In The Comfort of Crows, Margaret Renkl presents a literary devotional: fifty-two chapters that follow the creatures and plants in her backyard over the course of a year. As we move through the seasons—from a crow spied on New Year’s Day, its resourcefulness and sense of community setting a theme for the year, to the lingering bluebirds of December, revisiting the nest box they used in spring—what develops is a portrait of joy and grief: joy in the ongoing pleasures of the natural world, and grief over winters that end too soon and songbirds that grow fewer and fewer.

Along the way, we also glimpse the changing rhythms of a human life. Grown children, unexpectedly home during the pandemic, prepare to depart once more. Birdsong and night-blooming flowers evoke generations past. The city and the country where Renkl raised her family transform a little more with each passing day. And the natural world, now in visible flux, requires every ounce of hope and commitment from the author—and from us. For, as Renkl writes, “radiant things are bursting forth in the darkest places, in the smallest nooks and deepest cracks of the hidden world.”
