The Heritage Group

Mission:  The Houston Heights Woman’s Club was organized in 1900 to seek wisdom and strive to do good by supporting any literary and scientific undertaking, the maintenance of a library and the promoting of painting, music and other fine arts.”  Over 100 years later, the club continues to provide activities for its members, including charitable, educational and social activities supporting such purposes as a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Overview: The Houston Heights Woman’s Club Heritage Group offers prospective members the opportunity to join our original daytime club which works in conjunction with the Evening Group in coordinating philanthropic projects and social events.  Many women choose to join both Groups, attending meetings and events as schedules permit.

Where and When:  Covid 2020 update - we continue meeting monthly via Zoom and in-person for leisurely Covid-safe strolls and chats exploring our beautiful local parks.

In keeping with time honored tradition, the Heritage Group meets at 10:30am from October to May at the clubhouse at 1846 Harvard Street.   Members gather regularly for meetings featuring interesting speakers and delicious potluck luncheons on the first Wednesday of each month and also participate in a variety of activities during the month including field trips, community outreach projects and social events.

Activities:

  • We offer numerous events for you to enjoy throughout the year, including a Kickoff Brunch & Bubbly sponsored annually by the Heritage Group Board in September, English style Tea Parties served with the club china and silver, Thanksgiving and Christmas Feasts with the club providing the main entrĂ©e while members bring favorite side dishes or desserts, in addition to an array of other beautifully decorated and themed luncheons. We wind the year down in May with the traditional annual picnic, now held indoors in air conditioned comfort.
  • Recent field trips include a tasty and highly enjoyable Heights Foodie Tour, the Clayton Library for Genealogical Research,  the Painted Churches of Schulenburg, the 1940 Air Terminal Museum and an interactive Paper Source scrapbook workshop. These fun and educational trips always include trying out new restaurants.
  • The Heritage Group also participates in a number of community outreach programs respecting both tradition and responding to current times including the annual creation and delivery of artistically member-crafted Valentines and decorated cookies to area assisted living facilities and other programs benefitting local children’s needs.  We further engage in close collaboration with the Evening Group in assisting Communities in Schools projects benefitting Heights High School, the ongoing Women’s Studies Library Initiative and the highly successfully Heights area schools’ annual Uniform Drive.
  • Additionally, the Group maintains a fully functioning board and multiple committees presenting a diverse range of volunteer service options.

Membership information:  Annual dues for the Heritage Group are currently $30 payable to HHWC Heritage Group and may be mailed or delivered in person at the next scheduled meeting.
